We could describe postmodernism as a way of reforming modernism rather than replacing it with something altogether new. B: That is like Vico's argument against Descartes and Cartesian method in 1700. Vico objected that scientific method required the study of history, particularly the history of rhetoric, and that it was impossible to arrive at truth by abandoning all of the past. He was shocked that they thought a nonhistorical study of math and logic would yield truth in human matters. Vico therefore devoted hirxlsell to historical research, even though he regarded himself as a Baconian and a thoroughly modern scientist.

B: I would distinguish between modern critique and dialogue differently. I think that you are seeing the tradition as too continuous, where the same thing is being repeated, with subtle variations. I am not sure that dialogue allows for this sort of continuity. On the other hand, it sounds like you think critique must simply sever relation, must refuse to listen to what the preceding texts had to say. I would emphasize the discontinuity in dialogue: the way that each interlocutor can disagree with others, while still listening and learning from them.

P: This is one of the examples where Levinas and Rosenzweig hook too much into the dichotomous options of modern thought. B: I think the argument is that the only way to protect the other from sufiwing is to distrust myself radically. If you look at it as trying equally to prevent each of us from suffering, then I, as the one who thinks or controls or judges, will always give my own concerns first place. A reciprocal concern about suffering is too contaminated by my own strategic interests. P: But if you reconceptualize the whole thing and stop making individual rights the goal, and if you see in the Jewish community that the goal is a series of dialogic relationships around the table, then maybe you won't need to follow Levinas in reversing Hegel and overstating the authority of the other.
