Randall also subdivided the lot along its perimeter streets, and used the lot for growing abundant produce in planting beds and orchards. Alexander Randall died in 1881 leaving the house to his second wife, Elizabeth Blanchard Randall. After her death in 1895, three of Alexander's children formed the Randall Trustees to care for the disposal of Randall's estate and the continued maintenance of the lot. The Trustees subdivided several more lots along North Street and Maryland Avenue and had the west wing enlarged into a two-and-a-half story, colonial revival style house.

Since the late 19th-century the city has seen a fair amount of development in its urban core as lots, many of which had remained intact since their original formulation in the early 1700s, were subdivided. These subdivisions were mostly residential as people with connections to the Baltimore and Washington, DC, commercial centers settled there. Especially as other efforts at mercantile development failed, the city turned ever more towards the attraction of tourists and new residents. Freedom in one sense meant freedom from slavery, but exactly what freedom allowed one to move toward was never made clear.
